How to find tabs in Google Chrome, By Smwipl

The ability to find browser tabs in Google Chrome can be a major time saver.  Tabs are great for multi-tasking, but they are easy to lose track of.  You can try using tab groups to keep things in order, but you can still lose track.  In Chrome version 87, the Search tab button was first rolled out for Chromebooks and Windows and MacOS machines.  It gives you the ability to do exactly that.  The feature does not need to be turned on or opt-in.  You should see a new button on the right side of your tab that looks like a down arrow.

How to find your Chrome tab

Click on that arrow, and you get a quick vertical list of all tabs that open in any number of windows.  You can scroll up and down to see all the tabs, or you can search by searching the tab in the search box at the top.  Here's how to do it

 1. Click the down arrow to the right of your tab

2. Type a tab name in the search box.

3. Click on the tab you want to see.  Chrome will switch to the tabs and windows you select.

The search tab box is searched only for the title and URL of the opened tab.  It will not search the contents of those tabs.  If you have a tab open for cubs.com, you might want to search for "Cubs" instead of "Rizzo".  As you type, the tabs that meet the search result criteria will be reduced.  If you press Enter, the first result in the list will open.  As mentioned, it will search for all tabs that are open in all windows.

If you do not see the down arrow, make sure you are running an up-to-date version of Google Chrome.  This feature was originally introduced in Chromebook itself, but was soon brought to Chrome version 89 for Chrome and Chrome for Windows.

If you regularly use multiple Chrome tabs, this feature can be life-saving.  A tab search can be a great way to speed up your productivity.  This is the kind of feature we would like to see on our phones as well.
