Oculus Quest 2 Review: The Best VR Experience, By Smwipl

The future of VR is mostly safe in Facebook's hands.

Source: Nick Sutrich / Android Central

When the original Oculus Quest was announced in September 2018, Facebook did not expect it to do as it did (evident from the fact that it could never keep the Quest in stock).  The Oculus Quest experience went beyond the expectation of a VR headset by being more than just affordable - it was easy to use as a video game console.  Since that launch, Facebook has acquired several VR game development studios, brought many developers onboard with its Oculus store, and changed the paradigm of what people expect from a standalone VR experience.

The Oculus Quest 2 promises that experience in a way, with a processor that is one to three times the new generation in the original Oculus Quest, ergonomics with a lighter and smaller headset, a higher-resolution display, a completely new lens design,  Redesigned controllers, and more accessories allow you to shake a stick.  Facebook has also increased its stock this time and, unlike the PS5 or Xbox series S / X, has actually become available after launch.

On top of all this, the Oculus Quest 2 is $ 100 cheaper than the original Oculus Quest, and the more expensive model doubles the storage of the most expensive SKU of the original Oculus Quest.  Is this the VR console we've all been waiting for?

Oculus Quest 2: Price and Availability

Oculus Quest 2 was launched on October 13, 2020 and is sold at all major retailers.  The Quest 2 has been widely available on the market throughout its time, preventing some initial stock difficulties - unlike the original Oculus Quest, which was very difficult to obtain over its entire 18-month retail lifetime.  Facebook's own earnings numbers suggest that Quest 2 has sold more than 5 million units by the end of Q1 2021, meaning it is also selling alongside other next-generation consoles.

The Oculus Quest 2 retails for $ 299 with 64GB of internal storage, while the Oculus Quest 2 retails for $ 399 for 256GB of internal storage.  Both models are sold in a white-only way, and neither model supports any type of expandable storage, so be sure to get the model that has enough storage to hold your game.

Oculus Quest 2 games are obtained through the Oculus Store and downloaded directly into the headset.  You can browse the headset either in the shop on the Oculus website or on your smartphone with the Oculus app.  The game, with few exceptions outside that range, cost between $ 10 and $ 30 on average.

Subsequently, most games in the 1-2 GB size range are average, but there are quite notable exceptions to this.  The largest Oculus Quest 2 game is upwards of 12GB after installation and you want to make sure you have enough free space to keep them updated.  Between all the free titles on the Oculus App Lab at the Oculus Store, and extras like adding custom songs to the Beat Saber, we recommend the 256GB model.

  Oculus Quest 2 Basics

If you haven't used the original Oculus Quest (or haven't played anything in VR), here's the following.  Like the PlayStation, Xbox or Nintendo Switch, the Oculus Quest 2 is a standalone console, built with VR in mind.  TV is not required for this, but it displays a flat version of what's happening in VR by making direct calls to popular smart TVs, Google Cast devices, Facebook's own displays, and even smartphone or tablet apps.  So that everyone in the room can see what's going on.

The first time you turn on your Oculus Quest 2, you will need to sign in with a Facebook account using the Oculus app on your smartphone.  Once you log in, you will need to decide if you want to experience VR while standing or sitting.  If you select a permanent (room-scale) experience, you will be asked to use your controller (and built-in camera) to draw secure boundaries around your room so that you can crash into anything valuable.  Do not.  It is far less fearful that it can sound.

In general, you will find your games and applications from the official Oculus store, which can be accessed either on Quest 2 or via the Oculus app on your smartphone.  The box comes with everything you need to play: Oculus Quest 2 headset, two controllers, a USB Type-C cable, and a charge adapter to plug into an outlet.

That's all.  You don't need external sensors or cameras, nothing to power the thing (other than a full battery, of course), and nothing more to experience the amazing VR you have anywhere.

Oculus Quest 2 Performance and Graphics

Each new console generation has, historically, given a certain wow-factor that you play for the first time.  We often find ourselves humming how good these graphics are?  Each time the on-screen character wanders to the next corner or to that wide-open field, the air waving.  While Oculus Quest 2 does not yet have games specifically made for its new powerhouse processor, the difference between the two generations of the Oculus Quest system may not be stable to the human eye.

The most noticeable difference here is not the powerful new processor - it's the new pixel-packed display.  At 1832 x 1920 pixels-on-sight, this brand is the "absolutely 4K" single LCD display pack new on the Oculus Quest in 50% more pixels than the Pentile OLED.  Being a single LCD instead of two separate displays attached to the lens, the Oculus Quest 2 melts the positivity with the Oculus Rift S's original Oculus Quest for a wonderfully crisp experience.

  1 / 2Quest 1 vs 2 Screen Off

But it's not just the number of pixels that make this display crisp - it's their arrangement.  Oculus Quest used a pentile arrangement, placing subpixels in the shape of a diamond: two small green subpixels on the left and right corners, and large red and blue subpixels on the top and bottom corners.  When put into a square grid, these diamonds leave a black space in the middle, creating large gaps that the human eye can easily see in VR because the display is just centimeters from our eyes.  The images above give you a good idea of what to expect, but Quest 2 is also faster than photographing these images.

Oculus Quest 2 uses an RGB-striped display, which places a long green, red, and blue subpixel right next to each other to form a proper square.  These squares fit neatly together in the grid, resulting in pixels closer together.  Coupled with the fact that the Oculus Quest 2 display has 50% more pixels and you will quickly understand how crisp this display is.  Everything from distance detail to up-closed text is ridiculously easy to see, and it makes the world so much more immersive because it doesn't feel like you're always looking through a mesh filter.

The best part about having a fairly high-resolution display is that all games, even those not specifically optimized for Oculus Quest 2 yet, will get an immediate upgrade.  This new display is not yet more pixel-dense, although it runs at a higher level than the original Quest.  At 120Hz, the Oculus Quest 2 sounds considerably smoother than the Oculus Rift S - which runs at 80Hz - and a full generational leap over the original Oculus Quest - which runs at 72Hz.

At 120Hz, the Oculus Quest 2 feels significantly smoother than the Oculus Rift S, and a full generational leap over the original Oculus Quest.

The Oculus Quest 2 only ran at 72 Hz at launch but soon got an update running at 90 Hz on all games and apps, with support for some games and apps, which according to the v28 Quest 2 update in April, clocked up to 120 Hz.  Were equal.  Everything feels instantly smoother and more realistic than the original quests, and a higher refresh rate also means fewer people will have difficulty with major illness.  While VR has not had a widespread problem of motion sickness for the past decade and a half, there are some people who experience it with a refresh rate.

As you would expect from a brand new video game console, Oculus Quest 2 has a significant improvement in graphics quality compared to the original Oculus Quest and is a "next generation" console launching with the PS5 and Xbox series  .  S / x.  Most of these improvements come from the brand new Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2, a system-on-a-chip (SoC) that is more than three generations newer than the Snapdragon 835 found in the original Oculus Quest.

The Oculus Quest 2 is very much the "next generation" console to be launched with the PS5 and Xbox series S / X.

For reference, the Snapdragon 835 was a smartphone chipset released in March 2017, while the Snapdragon XR2 is a custom VR chipset based on the 2020 Snapdragon 865.  With the expected performance difference in a chipset, which is three years new, Qualcomm has packed a few brands.  New capabilities such as new shades, support for 120 Hz display, ability to push 3x higher resolution and 11x improvements in AI calculation.

Although Facebook did not allow the launch of Quest 2-exclusive games, the announcement of Resident Evil 4 VR marked a change in the company's strategy.  Developers are no longer restricted from targeting only Quest 2, but Facebook is still encouraging them to keep the original Oculus Quest in mind as of April 2021 there were over one million active users.  As a Quest 2 user, you can expect the game to have significantly higher resolutions than the original Oculus Quest, a smoother framerate, higher-quality models, higher resolution textures, greater distance and up-pass detail, real-time lighting,  There are blooming effects, better particles and better shades.

Our Oculus Quest 2 vs. Oculus Quest graphics comparison includes some launch titles, which were quickly updated for Quest 2.  While these titles give you an idea of what to expect from a game built for both systems, one can get a sense of what the difference will be when using each.  Much more than you can see here.  Aside from a graphics and resolution upgrade, Quest 2 games run much more smoothly for the ability to run at 90Hz or 120Hz.

Better experience,  Oculus Quest 2 performance and battery life

In addition to native Quest 2 games, Quest 2 can stream PC VR games at 120Hz with the latest virtual desktop patches.  This makes the Quest 2 the most affordable 120Hz PC VR headset.  It does not require any wires to play PC VR games, as both the Oculus Air Link and the virtual desktop can stream these games over your home Wi-Fi connection.

This new 120Hz refresh rate is something that is only available on apps and games that specifically call for convenience - yet, you have to enable it in the experimental menu before you see the benefits.  120 Hz is a large-scale paradigm for mobile VR, which, historically, was often replayed for 60–72 Hz on most headsets.  120Hz was previously only available for high-end PCs and expensive headsets like the Valve Index (which can actually be maxed out at 144Hz), and that means that Quest 2 is the best to play PC VR games without spending a large part of the change.  Inexpensive way.

The original Oculus Quest, while amazing in itself, was very clearly held back by the aging mobile chipset that powered it.  Even though the Oculus Quest 2 is powered by a mobile chipset, three years of silicon advancements and a partnership with Facebook's own research division have yielded something even more impressive than I expected.  Despite increasing the resolution by 50% and increasing the refresh rate by 25% at launch (hitting a 60% refresh rate as of April 2021), Quest 2 drops a fast power on everything.

From the menu to the loading time, Quest 2 is a substantial improvement over the original in every way.  While playing the game, pressing the Oculus home button immediately brings up the universal home menu and, better yet, that menu now floats on most games in the form of an overlay rather than taking you away from the game altogether.  Similarly, clicking on a recorded video or taking a screenshot triggers an immediate response from the system, while the original may take one or two seconds (sometimes).  Also you sometimes see them pausing and stopping along the way - something that I rarely happen on Quest 2.

I can remember many times when I was directly comparing the game between two headsets, where the video recorded from the original Oculus Quest would get corrupted for no apparent reason.  This is yet another thing I had not experienced on Quest 2, and it all adds up to a more consistently flawless execution than you might expect or expect from a VR console.

Casting on TV or Chromecast has also seen improvement, although not as much as I was expecting.  Some games are still a pixelated mess that is not pleasant to watch at all, while others perform just fine.  This messy game is going to negatively affect the experience of people in the same room as you are trying to see, which is really unfortunate.  Here's hoping that Oculus makes it more reliable in the future.

Support for Wi-Fi 6 means faster downloads, a more consistent connection and better wireless streaming.  We will cover streaming performance in depth below, but know this: Wi-Fi 6 makes a substantial difference in wireless streaming performance.

The only thing that is not better is battery life.

The only thing that is not better is battery life.  Ironically, the battery life on the Quest 2 is about 30 minutes less than the original Quest.  It takes about 2-3 hours of gameplay before you have to re-charge it.  You can get around that limitation by getting one of the best accessories for the Quest 2, such as the Elite strap with a built-in battery, or plugging a regular USB Type-C power bank while playing.

Oculus Quest 2 Comfort, Design, and Sound

When Oculus Quest 2 is compared to Oculus Quest, almost everything about Quest 2 screams new technology.  it's small!  It is light!  It is more powerful!  It uses a cloth and velcro head strap - wait, what?

  Headset on Oculus Quest 2

While it may seem a little bizarre to Facebook to feel like an "old" VR standby has returned from a more rigid head strap, I was pleasantly surprised to find my initial thoughts on the strap incorrectly  Was.  Let's get negative already, shall we?  I hate resizing this thing.  On the back of the strap, you will find two plastic pieces that can be disassembled or brought close to tighten or loosen the strap.

Although it sounds great in practice, and is simple to boot, the fact that most people have hair on their head makes this simple task a difficult task and, if you clumsily grab your hair  And drag, then a painful.  If you are the only one using Quest 2 in your home, it is unlikely that you will have an issue.  The new straps are super comfortable to wear, do a great job of balancing the weight of the headset on your entire skull, and hold their position really well.

1/3 Oculus Quest 2 Head Strap with Ponytail Back

The strap adjustment issue really rips its ugly head only when it goes around to play for others, because it's more complicated than I want it to be.  If you have long hair, you may struggle a bit with it.  If you like the general size and design of the straps, but want something more comfortable, the VR strap's head strap pads are a great way to go.

Still, despite the annoyance with adjusting it, these straps are much better than the ones on the original quests because they actually hold the back of your cranium rather than the mid-point.  The Oculus Quest 2 fit pretty much all the head sizes in my test, all the way down to the head of my 6-year-old son.

In addition to being lightweight and small, I also really liked the redesigned foam face interface, which helped greatly pad the headset against my cheeks and forehead.  These pads are thicker and more supportive, yet are easier to remove as the original.  When many people are playing, these pads have to change nice and easy, making things completely sanitary.

There is even an adapter that comes in each box to add extra space for those who need glasses while playing.  Since the foam sucks in moisture very easily, you may want to consider taking a face interface replacement or silicone cover, especially if you are going to share the Quest 2 with others.

If you have got more than 70 mm IPD, then you are out of luck.

The lens on the inside features a new physical housing design, including a new physical spacing adjustment system.  Everyone's head is just slightly different, and this difference also includes the distance between the eyes.  The average distance between pupils, or inter-pupillary distance (IPD), is approximately 63 mm.  As such, Oculus Quest 2 comes out of the box using this setting.  Users whose eyes are stretched closer together can push the lens towards each other, while users with slightly wider eyes can push them out.

The lenses snap into three predetermined positions, with the default 63 mm distance marked by a "2" correct between the lenses.  Keep them out at 68 mm while pushing them outward to preset "3", while pushing them inward to preset "1" separates them 58 mm apart.  Missed anything here?  That's right, if you've got more than 70mm IPD, you're out of luck.

While Facebook's new lens is designed to fit around a 3mm range within each preset, it gets really uncomfortable if you're playing cross-eyed.  IPD of over 70 mm is a small minority, but it is still a minority of gamers who are going to close due to a design decision.  Since Quest 2 uses a single LCD display like the Oculus Rift S, we're hoping Facebook will figure out a way to bridge the gap for these gamers.  If you've got an IPD somewhere in between these presets, then we've got some suggestions on how to adjust the Quest 2 IPD that will give you a clearer way of looking at things in VR.

Even when you've got an IPD between 56mm and 70mm, you'll find that the "sweet spot" can be a bit harder to find at first.  It is the position on your face that makes the lens most clear.  For me, it always felt like the headset was sitting on my face sometimes a little too high, but I forgot about it after a few seconds.

  Oculus Quest 2 speakers

The Oculus Quest 2 sports built-in speakers, exactly like the Oculus Quest, but this time around they are built around the idea of replacing the head strap.  You'll find these speakers inside the rotating strap arm, one on each side of the headset, and can be used with any compatible Oculus Quest 2 head strap.  Yes, this means you can remove the strap and instead perform some infrequent wiring hijinx and worry about ruining your headset.

With louder volume, better bass, fuller sound (read: less tinny), and even better 3D audio, the quality of the speakers is a notable leap from the original Quest.  Unlike Quest or Rift S, I found that playing rhythm games such as the Beat Saber was actually very enjoyable using these speakers.  Earlier, the sound quality was too lacking to bother.  If you want the absolute best sound, you should slap on a pair of wired headphones and plug them into the 3.5mm jack on that side.

The Quest 2 does not support Bluetooth headphones because too much latency has been introduced, which will result in some strange human sensory issues and general no-no VR comfort in the world.

Oculus Quest 2 new controller and hand tracking

Source: Nick Sutrich / Android Central

The Oculus Touch Controller has been some of the best controllers in the VR industry for a long time.  For the most part, the 3-generation Oculus Touch controllers that ship with the Oculus Quest 2 already improve upon the excellent design, but they carry one negative feature - they are a big one.  While it is good in some areas of design, I did find a wider grip for the first week of use.  Thankfully, my hand quickly adjusted to the size difference, but some people probably did not have that experience.

Overall, these controllers feel a lot more solid than previous touch controllers, with the plastic making it look like it will withstand more hits over time.  The 2-gen touch controllers were notorious for having a broken light ring, as the design split when it was too difficult.  When you can do a lot by hitting people, walls, or other objects while in VR, sometimes it is not possible to avoid shutting down the controller simultaneously.  If you find yourself doing this regularly, choose the best VR cover accessories like the Halo Controller Protectors, which will keep that ring in good shape.

Unlike previous controllers, the new design makes it impossible to accidentally press the home and menu buttons.

Above, you will find that the spacing between the buttons is much wider, and there is now a dedicated thumb rest for games that often do not use face buttons for input.  In addition, the Oculus Home and Menu buttons have been moved directly under the joystick on each controller and are now concave.  This design makes it essentially impossible to accidentally press while playing, which is a godsend if you've ever played a game like Beat Saber and have been interrupted regularly by pressing the menu or home button.

1/5 Oculus Quest 2 vs Quest Controller 6 Battery Door

Each controller button, as well as each joystick, features a capacitive sensor to detect the difference between touching the button and actually pressing it.  The trigger and grip buttons are smoother than 2-gen touch controllers and feel really great to push.  In addition, Facebook is packed into some more advanced haptic motors inside the controller.  We have no example of how these new motors can propel future sports, but expect them to be exploited sometime in the future.

For me, the best part of the new controllers is the battery door.  Yes, it sounds crazy but, once again, if you've ever used 2-gen touch controllers from the Oculus Quest or the Rift S, you'll know how easily they will shut down.  Around this time, Facebook is using old-fashioned clips to lock the battery door instead of magnets.  It was a way out, better decision, and I'm glad they made it.

The best part of the new controllers is the battery door, which no longer closes during play.

No one time the battery door fell while I was playing.  Contrast that with 2-gen touch controllers (Oculus Quest and Oculus Rift S) where the compartment will be closed practically every 30 seconds and you will quickly understand how big it really is.  On top of that, Facebook extended the design of the wrist straps to be more durable and connect them to controllers more easily (read: no device needed to remove).

Even though these 3-gen touch controllers still use an AA battery for power, Facebook was able to maximize battery life on the controllers, ensuring that you are not replacing the battery for months.  Yes, you read that right.  Rechargeable AA batteries are easy to use in place of those environmentally unfriendly disposables, thankfully, and make it easy to replace removable batteries if you forget to charge them.  Alternatively, the anchor charging dock for the Oculus Quest 2 comes with a rechargeable controller battery that you won't need to remove;  Just leave it on the dock when you're done playing.

As we saw on Oculus Quest, hand tracking on Oculus Quest 2 is a very unique experience, even if it is very limited.  By default, Oculus Quest 2 will look for controllers at all times.  When it doesn't find them, it will automatically enable hand tracking, which uses the same front camera to see your hands and translate them into VR.  The term is highly used in technology, but it really sounds magical when your hands first appear in VR.

Hand trekking works best in a well-lighted room and is generally a more enjoyable experience when used for simple tasks.  You can choose to manually toggle between the controller and hand tracking, instead pressing a button in the Quick Actions panel in Settings.

It's better to just watch a movie on your Quest 2 or go for a walk with friends when you don't have to bother with the controllers.  There are some games that support hand tracking, but since this is not the most accurate tracking experience in the world, most games are the best when it comes to controllers.  Yes, even designed with hands in mind.

As of May 2021, Facebook added the option for developers to use a new high-fidelity hand tracking experience.  Simply put, it doubles the speed at which the cameras on the Quest 2 track your hands, resulting in a better overall experience.  While Quest 2 can now track more rapid hand movements and gestures, it still struggles with low light and precise tracking, as there is no way to see the fingers that might be behind your hands,  Thus may reduce the vision of the cameras.  Some games, such as the Hand Physics Lab, include some simple predictive behaviors to help fill the gaps, but hand tracking is largely an experimental and often frustrating experience when used for complex tasks.

Oculus Quest 2 Replaces Oculus Rift

Facebook has officially discontinued the Oculus Rift S and Oculus Quest, leaving Oculus Quest 2 as a single path to the company's VR strategy.  We saw Nintendo move this model over the years with the Switch, which combined both the company's portable and console divisions, and like Nintendo, Facebook has now merged its portable and PC divisions into one solid product  Who can do all this.

While the Oculus Quest 2 is most effective as a fully standalone, wireless headset, it can be hooked up to a computer via an $ 80 Oculus Link cable or through one of several wireless methods.  The Oculus Link is a 15-foot cable that plugs into your PC's USB Type-C port and transforms the Oculus Quest 2 into an Alafide Oculus Rift, complete with the Oculus Rift home screen and all.  In fact, you have to completely disconnect the cable to return to the Quest 2's home screen.

Over the past several months, Facebook has improved the overall quality of the Oculus Link, rather than launching it from a softer image for a razor-sharp visual experience that differs from the VR headset only by keeping the PC connection in mind.  Does not look and feel.  .  Oculus Air Link is a wireless way to stream PC VR games to your VR2, launched as part of the April v28 Quest 2 update.  Air Link is still in beta and has some flaws, with a relative lack of quality adjustment options, but a way to gain access to PC VR games without having to buy a cable or other third-party software.

For those with a powerful gaming PC, the real killer app you want to invest in is a virtual desktop - a 3-party app, priced at $ 20 at the Oculus Quest Store, and you should have your PC's desktop on your Oculus Quest  2 enables streaming wirelessly.  .  While it is nice to see your PC's desktop on VR on a much larger screen, this is not the actual draw of the app (in this case).

Virtual desktops still provide the best experience to Quest 2 users and more customizability than official Oculus solutions.

Instead, the focus is on the ability to wirelessly stream PC VR games to your Oculus Quest on a virtual desktop.  This makes Oculus Quest 2 the preferred way to experience VR on a PC with no wires, and the experience only gets better when you've got a fast Wi-Fi 6 router.  In my case, I am using the Linksys AX4200 mesh router.  Now that I've got an Oculus Quest 2, I've found that Wi-Fi 6 routers have a new purpose that I really care about: they can be used to create a nig-perfect wireless VR experience.

While official Oculus solutions are fine, Virtual Desktop opens up a significant number of customization options that will allow users to tweak to get the best experience.  As of May 2021, the only way to play PC VR games at 120Hz is on Virtual Desktop Quest 2.  The feeling of playing a VR game at 120Hz is not much and knowing that you only have to spend $ 300 to get there, given that you only had to spend $ 1,000 for the same experience a year ago (and  You must also use a wire to achieve this).

  Oculus Quest 2 Facebook Equation

I know you want to save the best for last, but conferences are boring and I like to avoid them.  As such, I have mostly had very, very positive things to say about Oculus Quest so far.  It is basically better in every way than the original, but there is one thing that Quest 2 is bringing more with the future of Oculus: Forced Facebook Login.

As of October 1, 2020, all new Oculus customers have had to sign in to their headsets with a Facebook account.  If you are buying an Oculus Quest 2, it means that you - whether you use an Oculus account on an older Oculus headset.  Simply put, you cannot use Oculus Quest 2 without a Facebook account.  You cannot even reach the home screen to play a game without one.  It is, officially, completely a Facebook product, and it is going to stay that way.

If you hate Facebook and don't want any part of it, here you can get off the train.

Anyway, it is good that the need to use Facebook account is annoying to some people.  It also means that you cannot create just another account without your real name, as it is against Facebook's policies.

It also means that people under the age of 13 are having to use a parent account to use Oculus Quest 2.  It is also going to be a problem for some parents, and it makes it difficult for young people to get into VR.  Granted, Facebook (and many VR companies) recommend staying away from VR until you are 13, anyway.  I am not someone who is a member of this train of thought, but the account position is compatible with the rest of the plot, so at least they are consistent.

In the end, it is going to boil you down to any extent whether you trust Facebook or not.  I would like to say that most people do not care and are going to use Facebook, regardless.  Using a Facebook account is likely to be more convenience than some, as having a populated list of friends in your headset automatically is a big plus.

After all, Sony requires you to use a Sony account on PlayStation, Microsoft uses Microsoft accounts on Xbox, and Nintendo accounts on the Nintendo Switch.  Why should Facebook not use a Facebook account on Facebook-owned company Oculus?  If your Facebook account gets banned, the answer to that question lies in the ability to render your headset too useless.  It is best to use your digital shopping and device for your social networking activity, and it is a real diversion for some people.

Should you buy Oculus Quest 2?

Yes.  Absolutely and powerfully, you should buy an Oculus Quest 2 if you are interested in VR gaming.  This is a major step in the right direction and, ultimately, represents the future of the VR industry at large.  While there will always be a market for PC VR, just as regular "pancake" on TV is for gaming, Oculus Quest 2 is the culmination of everything the VR industry has been working on for the better part of the last decade.

It is truly a console-quality experience.  One that you might be wondering why you would ever deal with a more complex experience again, even if the added power of a PC can bring about more detailed visuals.  This is because it is about more than just an easy experience - it is ultimately about a better experience that allows you to overcome real-world troubles (annoying techniques that never seem to work) and  Experiences a different reality.  A virtual reality.

  4.5 out of 5

Based on the negatives, I would normally dock a full point (for four stars out of five), but Oculus Quest 2's ability easily adds one half star back to the score.  This is one of those times where you can recognize the flaws of a product, understand that these will be deal-breaking defects for some people, but can look past as it is the best experience for the vast majority of gamers.  is gonna be.  This is why Oculus Quest 2 is one of the best gaming purchases you can make these days.

Oculus Quest 2 Accessories

While Oculus Quest 2 ships with everything you'll technically need to play, you want a number of accessories to make sure to get the best experience.  While there is no third-party replacement for official Oculus Touch controllers, fully body trackers, or other things of that nature, there are foam pad replacements, head strap replacements, more comfortable wrist straps, controller grips, and more.  Make the experience better than before.

While the box that can be used as a storage compartment in a 2 Quest ship, it is not the most convenient solution and is a bit awkward to use if you are planning to carry your headset with you.  Instead, check out the best Oculus Quest 2 cases, which will secure your Quest 2 and make it very easy to take it with you, no matter where you are.

If the foam face pad that ships with Quest 2 irritates your skin, or you're just too sweaty while playing, check out the best Oculus Quest 2 face cover.  These are made of various materials, such as pu-leather or silicone, which wipe sweat and are easy to clean and clean.  They are very soft and can keep your face cool.

If you find yourself running out of batteries during a regularly populated long game session: One, you can choose an Oculus Elite Strap built from the battery - which is a discharge from the regular Oculus Elite Strap - or only  The best Oculus Quest 2 battery pack to keep in your pocket while playing one.

Even though you can put the Quest 2 on most smart TVs, Chromecast or other devices, there is a delay in audio that can confuse the person playing in VR.  This is why the best Oculus Quest is great for grabbing a pair of 2-compatible headphones.  Not only that, but you can play in peace, block out the outside world and immerse yourself in virtual reality even further.  As a bonus, it may not bother your roommates if they are trying to watch TV while you are playing VR in the same room.

You can, but not without first putting complimentary eyeglasses spacer.  Otherwise, your glasses are highly likely to press directly against the Quest 2 lens and be permanently scratched.  If this spacer does not fit your specs properly, the VR cover makes a thicker one for $ 9 which will probably get the job done better.

How do I close Oculus Quest 2?

You might think that when you press the power button, you can turn Quest 2 off, but you're only holding it to sleep, meaning that if you put it on your head it will turn back on  - And the battery will run out meanwhile much faster.  To turn it off completely, press and hold the power button for 3 seconds until you hear the power down chime.  See the Anchor Charging Dock for Quest 2 if you want a way to keep it charged without plugging it in.

What's the best way to extend my Quest 2 battery life?

First of all, be sure to close your Quest 2 completely, not put it to sleep.  Next, Oculus recommends that you only use an officially licensed solution to charge the Quest 2, such as the anchor charging dock mentioned above, or the official charging cable that comes with the headset.  Other USB-C cables can power it, but too much or too little can cause problems.  Finally, when your headset finishes recharging, you will see a green light next to the charging port;  At that point, remove the cable!  Do not leave the headset on charge indefinitely, as this may reduce its maximum battery life.

Can I use my Oculus Quest 2?

No, you should not use Oculus Quest 2 outside.  Sunlight can easily damage the display of the headset.  Oculus Quest has lenses that allow you to immerse yourself in VR, which is great, but they also act as magnifying glasses for sunlight.  If the sunlight on the Oculus Quest 2 collides with the lens, it can ignite the display inside the headset.  Air humidity can also damage the headset.

Even assuming you go outside with a headset attached to your face so that no sunlight goes in, Oculus Quest 2's cameras have a hard time keeping your touch controllers focused if sunlight.  Is interrupted.  The Quest 2 uses infrared LED tracking similar to the Wii, so if you ever had your windows closed to help with another random tracking issue, you'd understand what's going on.

Is Oculus Quest 2 backward compatible?

Mostly.  Oculus Quest games are playable on Oculus Quest 2, many with graphical enhancements.  The one exception is that Quest 2 is not compatible with Oculus Go games.  Several dozen Oculus Go games work on Oculus Quest, but they will not work on Oculus Quest 2.

Can I play SteamVR games on Oculus Quest 2?

Yes!  We have a guide on how to play SteamVR on Oculus Quest that walks you through the stages.  And, since it is the most popular VR game that will never appear in Oculus, we have a specific guide to playing Half-Life: Alix on Oculus Quest.

Why does my Quest 2 stay disconnected when using Oculus Link?

When using the Oculus Link cable to connect your Oculus Quest 2 to a PC for PC VR experience, many players experience random disconnects.  While this can sometimes be caused by a low quality or slow speed USB cable - you should always use a USB 3.1 cable to ensure the best speed - this problem is often attributed to Windows's underlying media handling and it  How the connection refreshes the data.

To fix this problem, you will need to be denied media access to your Quest 2 when you hook it up to a PC.  Upon first adding Quest 2, you should be presented with a pop-up box on your Quest 2, to allow your PC to access the data on the headset.  If you see permission to access data on your Oculus quest, be sure to select Deny.  While this seems like an odd solution, data access means accessing pictures, videos, and other files on the headset, not the connection used to display PC VR content on your Quest 2.

Can other people see what I'm playing on TV?

If you own Chromecast, they can!  We have a guide on how to share Oculus Quest games on TV, but the casting is built directly into the user interface.  You can make VR a more social experience by sharing what you are playing with others.

Add additional devices to the casting list.  Updated controller battery life list.  Updated display section to reflect availability of 90Hz and upcoming 120Hz patches.  The revised section about casting, as further testing has shown, was not as good as initially thought.  Added Price and Availability section.  Added accessories section.  Added section.  Added review update 6 months later.

Oculus Quest 2 review, 6 months later

The first six months of Oculus Quest 2's life have been nothing short of amazing.  Quest 2 originally took only seven weeks to remove, resulting in developers earning millions of dollars and Quest 2 taking over as the most used VR headset on Steam.  Large growth rates have proved to be a boon for the VR industry, with large scale, new games, as a significant number of ports, and general support for the Quest platform have been announced since the beginning of Quest 2.

Quest 2 only took seven weeks to exclude the original.

Support, as we have seen many times with failed consoles, ultimately, makes or breaks the system.  Quest 2 is the fastest-selling VR headset ever, however, without actual numbers from Facebook, we have survived with developer estimates of around 3 million units.  Given that PSVR has only sold 5 million units or 5 years in its lifetime, it is very unrealistic to see that Quest 2 is already hitting that number by more than half in four to five months.

To say that Facebook and developers are doubling down on support for Quest 2 as games, major updates, and perhaps an upcoming surprise.  As we saw with the original Oculus Quest, Oculus Quest 2 has already received several significant updates since its launch.  Quest 2 now supports multiple Facebook accounts and profiles on the same headset, making it easier to play the game between multiple people in the same household.

All applications and games now support a 90Hz refresh rate without the need for a manual developer-mode toggle, and 120Hz is already being tested for developers to implement in the future.  This makes it easier for most users to get a better, smoother overall experience.  The 90Hz mode can now also be used for all Oculus Link games.  Here's how to enable 90Hz for Oculus Link.

Against all odds, Facebook seems to have really relaxed its strict - and what felt arbitrary, many times - standard for the App Store.  This has resulted in virtual desktops being accepted as a fully featured Oculus Store app, with Quest 2 giving players the ability to play PC VR games wirelessly without sideloading a patch.

App lab and virtual desktop authentication have proved that Facebook is ready to relax very strict policies.

This alone, makes this headset feel like the next-gen PC VR headset, and it only takes $ 20 to do it: it's 1/4 of the price of the official Oculus Link cable and at least for me and my Y  - 6 houses for Fi, a better overall experience.  On the subject of the App Store policy exemption, Oculus launched App Lab and offers developers a way to test their app in an Early Access fashion.  This is a great way for developers to earn money while developing their titles and at the same time Oculus has bypassed most of the restrictions / requirements for the regular App Store.

Oculus Move launched roughly a month after Quest 2 and provides an easy way to keep track of how many calories you are burning in VR depending on which game you are playing.  This best exercise and workout makes the game a much better and more consistent experience.  For those times you will be sitting, however, you can now bring your couch to VR.  While it may seem a little strange at first, it is actually a simple way to sit on your designated couch between the scale of the room and the seated VR experiences.

Facebook Messenger integration is complete and makes communication with your Facebook friends much easier than before.  This makes it very easy to transfer videos and photos between all your devices or share them with friends.  Apps and games from the Oculus Store can now be gifted as well, making Oculus one of the few companies to support digital gifting in the realm of gaming.  It is bizarre that such a rarity in the digital age but, thus, is the reality.

Quest 2 has gained many features since launch, all of which make for a better experience.

Even when you hit the home button, most of the apps and games in the Universal menu that appear are improved, as it appears on the current game rather than taking you home.  This is the difference between going home on your smartphone and allowing the active window to float on your screen, which prevents you from remembering anything important happening in the game.

All of this has happened in just six months after Quest 2 launch, and we expect a lot more to come in the next six months.  Estimates suggest that about 20% of Facebook employees are working on VR-related projects, which proves that the company is committed to fulfilling its promises.  Everything we have seen since launch, ranging from restrictive policies to rebates to more developer support, bodes well for the future of Quest 2 and the Quest platform.

It is still hard to understand why Oculus are unusable in headsets and accounts as a result of Facebook's social network.

A sad place - and this is more than just an injury to those affected - are those whose Facebook account is banned and, later, their Quest 2 has been rendered useless.  While we have extensively addressed the evidence for this, the possibility that banning someone's social media account may result in unusable purchases and disturbing a headset.

If Facebook could solve that problem - either by decoupling social media accounts with Oculus accounts - or through some other method, then they might have solved a shining issue with their product.  So as long as you can avoid such a fate, which, thankfully, most people do, you will be enjoying the very best that VR can offer, and as little as possible.
